Janice Sarafoglou, a Brocktonian from birth, has been employed with the Brockton Public Schools since 1974 when she began teaching English at North Junior High School. She transferred after a year to a similar position at West Junior High School where she remained until an opportunity to teach English in Brockton High School’s Azure Building arose just under a decade later. In 2002, after earning a Master’s degree in Secondary Guidance from Cambridge College, Ms. Sarafoglou shifted gears to a counseling position in the BHS Red Building where she remained until her 2009 retirement.
At the same time, Ms. Sarafoglou was working for Community Schools of Brockton as a Community School Coordinator at the former Winthrop School in the late 1970s and early 1980s, responsible for setting up afternoon and evening programs for students and community members on the north side of Brockton. She returned to Community Schools in 2003 as a counselor in the Brockton Evening Diploma Program and has been committed to the program and its goal to help adults earn a high school diploma ever since.
Her educational background also includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Northeastern University and another Master's degree in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). While her years of teaching and counseling were completely rewarding, Ms. Sarafoglou has found that her joy is assisting adults who have returned to school to earn their diplomas in the Evening Diploma Program: “I believe that this is truly one of the most important programs in Brockton and I hope that it will continue to serve adults needing that second chance for a long time to come.”
